Rather than my usual article, I’ve decided to feature some “guest” content this month. But before I do, I’d like to tell you the story about how I decided to share this content with you.
In November 2014, I wrote the first of a pair of articles for Technical Response on how to optimize email for mobile. I began that article with a confession: I do not own a smartphone.
And that was still true until late last week. But Friday, that changed.
Why I finally bought a smartphone
Thursday evening, a lightning strike destroyed my broadband access point and left me without telephone and internet service. And as Murphy’s Law would have it, my cellphone was in the mountains with my wife and daughter. (I rarely need a cellphone, so I share with my wife.) Suddenly, I couldn’t contact my family. I couldn’t check my email or access the Web. I couldn’t even call my telecom provider to get my service restored!
I finally decided I really need a backup in case my primary internet, email and phone service go down. I finally broke down and bought a smartphone.
The point of this story...
So how does this tie in with the content I’m going to share with you today? Well, after I finally got back online, the very first email I found waiting in my inbox for me was from Allison at Dotmailer (www.dotmailer.com). Ironically, while I was out shopping frantically for my first smartphone, Allison was reading my article in which I confessed to not owning one – that article on optimizing email for mobile. She had written to tell me she thought my article was great, and that her company had created a very popular infographic on just the same topic. In fact, it provides much the same material as my two articles, but in a more concise and easy-to-read format. I think it makes a handy checklist for preparing responsive emails.
So, since I am about to go on vacation and perhaps you are too, I thought I would simply pass on the link Allison provided to Dotmailer’s infographic – The Anatomy of a Responsive Email – created by Ross Barnard. I think you’ll find it useful.

Until September!
